We reuse the study serviceable cardboard cartons to package our shipments to you.  We recycle the various types of shipping materials: packing peanuts, air packs, foam and newspaper to cushion and protect your items.  

We urge our customers to look for opportunities for the continued use of serviceable packaging materials by contacting a recycling facility in their area.

SHIPPING & HANDLING FEES: Our standard shipping and handling fees cover 99% of  all shipments via ground service to street addresses with in the continental United States. This fee covers a single standard size carton.  Additional charges may be assessed for orders which contain items described as requiring a separate shipping fee or described as oversized. To keep shipping charges to a minimum many of the train sets and slot race sets that we sell are packaged in brown cardboard cartons rather than retail boxes.  If you prefer to purchase the set in retail packaging (as typically found on a store shelf) please contact customer service as often we have the same product for sale in retail packaging in our stores.  Please understand that due to the shape and size of this packaging this option will often add a minimum of $15 to $20 in additional shipping charges to your order.

Typically delivery by ground service should be completed in 1-7 working days after the shipment leaves our warehouse (7 days being from our location in Connecticut to California).

But since delivery is the responsibly of the carrier  we cannot guarantee* any specific delivery date for ground delivery by USPS or UPS.

IF YOU NEED DELIVERY BY A SPECIFIC DATE

Unless you require immediate delivery, ground delivery service is often all that is needed.  However if delivery is required by a specific date please use the special instructions section of the order form to indicate the required date. Please note that  Guaranteed* delivery by a specific date may require an upgrade to UPS 3 Day Select or 1 or 2 day Air Service to a street address. See below for information on how to request this service.

If you wish to upgrade to UPS or USPS Air Delivery Service please request that in the special instructions section of the order form as you finalize your order.  Specify the type of service and date you want the order delivered by. 

Upgrades to  AIR delivery ( UPS 1, 2 , or 3 day  or USPS Priority ) are subject to our standard  S & H fee plus the weight and size based shipping cost assessed by the carrier.  Note: When Upgrading to a Guaranteed* UPS Air delivery it means that after the package leaves our warehouse it is guaranteed* by UPS to be delivered with in the specified transit days. 
For example an order with 2 Day Air delivery placed on a Monday could be processed and shipped by us on Tuesday.  UPS would guarantee* 2 day delivery by Thursday. Saturday and Sunday are not transit days for UPS.  (Saturday AIR delivery is available in some regions for an additional fee.)

SHIPMENTS TO ADDRESSES OUTSIDE THE
CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES

In addition to the 48 continental United States we also ship to APO / FPO addresses as well as addresses in  Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and Canada.

At this time we cannot accept orders shipped to other locations.

FEES: Shipments outside continental United States are subject to our standard  S & H fee plus:

  1. The weight and size based shipping cost assessed by the carrier.

  2. Associated insurance costs.

  3. Document preparation costs (minimum fee $8.00)

We ship via US Air Mail or UPS Air service at your option.  Please note that if no shipping insurance is available to the destination country we cannot accept  responsibility for the shipment once it leaves our warehouse.  This means that you are entirely responsible for the shipment and can not make any claims if it is lost or damaged.

International shipping costs are subject to distance, weight and size considerations.  We cannot determine the actual cost until the order is  packaged for shipment  then this cost is added to your invoiced amount. Estimated shipping costs for  can vary from 20-40% or more of your order subtotal. Please contact:  CUSTOMER SERVICE if you require an more accurate estimate of the shipping charges that will be added to your order.

Please understand that we cannot estimate or predict in transit delivery times for international delivery by USPS service ( NOTE: International surface parcel post is no longer provided by USPS). It can vary from a few day or weeks to a month or more.  Delivery by UPS AIR service typically takes 3-5 days and the costs for this service can exceed $100 or more.

Shipments That Are Excessively Large or Heavy

Typically these additional charges are minor:  

Types of orders that may incur additional charges are:  (1) Orders containing a large quantity of models or trains or (2) Orders including one or more large items: train set, race set, case of track, case of roadbed, large scale models ( 1:350 ships, 1:16,1:8 cars).  These large bulky items are described as requiring special shipping consideration. 
For example, take a single order that contains 10 car or plane models or two large train sets described as requiring a separate S&H fee per set.
The order total displayed by the shopping cart will reflect the standard S&H fee.  However if the shipment requires separate cartons for each of the train sets or a oversized cartons for the models and the total shipping costs for these cartons exceed our standard fee we will add additional shipping costs to the total invoice when the order is shipped. 
Often we can pack your order to avoid the addition the full S&H fee per item as indicated in the description of the items and the additional costs if any are just a few dollars.

  • Shipping excessively large or heavy shipments provided at additional cost
    1. Selected items which are oversize or excessively heavy may be identified as requiring additional shipping cost.  This information will be provided on the website in the detailed description of the product. 
    2. In the case of an order requiring oversize or multiple cartons or an order requiring an excessively heavy shipment we reserve the right to waive our minimum fee and add  to your order total the exact weight / size based shipping rate charged by the carrier. 
      If you require specific shipping cost information when placing an large order email customer service after your order is placed. When requested we will determine the actual weight / size based shipping cost and notify you of this cost prior to invoicing and shipping. Once we receive your approval we will add this cost to your order total. 
      Please understand that this request may slightly delay the shipment of your order .

BACK ORDER POLICY

We strive to maintain a full and complete inventory of over 30,000 unique hobby and toy products. Many of the manufactures that we order from are small and occasionally may have difficulty re-supplying us on time. Please use the special instructions section of our on line order form and choose one of the 3 options to instructions us a how to serve you in the event that an item you ordered is temporarily out of stock: 

  1. Immediately ship all in-stock items. We will back order items expected in 15-45 days and ship them separately. (Separate  S&H Fee charged for each back order shipment.) OR

  2. Hold your order until all items have been filled. (Note: After 60 days we will ship available items and cancel those we cannot supply). OR

  3. Immediately ship all in-stock items and cancel items not available at this time. (We suggest that you re-order in 45-60 days.)

The "genius" who designed our shopping cart program didn't think about what happens when we offer a free shipping promotion. So our shopping cart sometimes handles free shipping details poorly and adds our standard shipping fee to your order. We will deduct those shipping charges from your order total prior to charging your credit card. Our invoicing program is separate from the shopping cart program and will apply the correct costs without a problem.

Details Of Free Shipping Offers

Website free shipping promotions are offered at various times: 

  1. Place an order for at in-stock merchandise for the minimum dollar amount specified (or more) by using our website shopping cart during the dates specified in our FREE SHIPPING offer and we will ship one standard size carton per order for FREE via UPS ground to a street address in the continental USA. 
  2. If the order exceeds one standard carton, we will deduct our standard shipping fee (see table above) from the actual UPS shipping of your order. 
    This pertains to orders containing items many items, or products that are described as oversized items, or as requiring a separate shipping fee. 
    Orders requiring multiple cartons will receive free shipping for the first carton, the remaining cartons ship at actual cost.
    After we have subtracted the shipping fee credit we will add the remaining shipping cost balance to your order total when we invoice it.
     

  3. EXCLUSIONS: Unless specified as a free shipping product these items  do not qualify for free shipping: 
     
    • Gargraves track and other train track
    • Large or Oversize items including Lionel Train sets, Carrera  and Go!! race sets, large HO train sets, 1:350 scale ship kits and other large scale model kits
    • Big Bang Cannons
    • Train Repair Parts and AC Gilbert Race Parts
    • Prior Orders, Back Orders
    • Shipments to PO Boxes or by USPS

ADJUSTMENTS: During our Free Shipping promotion the online total and order confirmation email may not indicate the correct shipping fees for orders which fall under the criteria specified above.  We will deduct excess fees or notify you by email to request your approval if any additional charges are required.

Holiday Shipping Order Guidelines

require UPS AIR service for Guaranteed Christmas delivery*. 
 
If you want delivery by Christmas use the special instructions section of the order form to let us know.  We strongly recommend that you also contact customer service by phone between 10 am and 5 pm  EST 1-860-223-0600 to confirm your shipment information and prevent any shipment delays.
If no special shipping instructions are provided with the order we will ship the order via standard ground shipment.

After 11:00am 12/22 our customer service staff will be working in our retail stores and will check for messages left on the customer service answering machine. Hobby Surplus will be closed from 12/23 - 12/27 and 12/30- 1/3
